What is GEC

Green Electricity Certificates (GECs) is China version of Environemental Attribute Certificate (EAC) or Renewableable Energy Certificates (RECs). It is administer and regulated by China’s National Energy Administration (NEA).

It was first launched at year 2017. In Sep 2024, IREC announced that no new electricity generation asset can be registered for IREC issuance in China. And the asset that already registered and the request issuance until 31 Mar 2025, issuance will be only permitted for power generated up until 31 December 2024. 1 Jan 2025 and onward China renewable energy, all EAC in China will be GEC and will not have double count issue.

Same as per RECs, 1 GEC represent 1MWh of renewable electricity. It complies with RE100 standard.

There are 3 trading platform (Beijing Power Exchange Center, China Green Electricity Certifcate Trading Platform, Guangzhou Power Exchange Center).

In China as at year 2024, renewable energy capacity of 1.889 TW. Solar 887GW, Wind 521MW, Hydro 436MW and etc.
